History

WGCL went on the air as WTTS in 1949, running 1000, then 5000 watts days and 500 watts nights on 1370 kHz. It was Bloomington's third AM radio station (the others being WSUA 1010 (1946–50) and WTOM 1490 (1947–51)). WTTS was a full-service/Middle-of-the-Road (MOR) station affiliated with the ABC Radio Network prior to that network's 1967 split, and the ABC Entertainment Network after that.

In 1960, Sarkes Tarzian put sister station WTTV-FM 92.3 on the air. It simulcasted WTTS until 1967. Tarzian also owned WTTV Channel 4 (Channel 10 from 1949 to 1953) until the mid 1980s. The station gradually started phasing in rock, beginning at night, in 1968. It dropped the MOR format in the mid '70s.

WTTS changed its callsign to WGTC on July 9, 1984, running a country-music format. On November 17, 1988, the station changed its call sign to the current WGCL.[2]

In September 2008, WGCL began simulcasting on the 95.9 FM signal in Bloomington formerly utilized by sister station WTTS-FM.
